Grinch Day

Grinch Headbands and Craftivity
We made Grinch headbands from a Grinch mask activity at seussville.com.
We made the Grinch craftivity, "To make the Grinch grin I would...."

The 100 chart and hi lo game below came from firstgradewow.blogspot.com. Click here for the unit.

100 Chart Grinch
We identified numbers and colored them in on a 100 chart to reveal a picture of the Grinch.

Grinch and Max Hi Lo Number Game
Students guessed numbers on a number line.

Grinch Cupcakes
We had delicious Grinch cupcakes. (Thank you Miss Brook!)

Grinch Card Game
We played a Grinch site word card game (similar to "Crash!")

Christmas Syllables

We sorted picture cards by the number of syllables.  We placed the picture cards in labeled stockings.

After sorting the picture cards, we completed a star syllable sheet.  We said the name of our kindergarten friend, clapped to see how many syllables are in the name, and placed star stickers under the picture to show how many syllables are in the name.

If You Take a Mouse to the Movies

Before reading the book, "If You Take a Mouse to the Movies" by Laura Numeroff, we generated ideas and created an anchor chart to list what the mouse would ask for at the movies.

After reading the story we created this cute craftivity.
Want a pattern?  Click here.  Merry Christmas!

Mooseltoe

Mooseltoe
After reading the book, "Mooseltoe" by Margie Palatini, we created our own Mooseltoe problem and solution craftivity.  Found the wonderful idea at Mrs. T's First Grade Class blog.

Oh! Christmas Tree

You Can't Catch Me, I'm The Gingerbread Man!

We read maps of our school to locate the missing gingerbread men!

Could the gingerbread man swim away from the fox?
We did a science experiment to find out that the gingerbread man wouldn't be able to swim away.

Comparing Gingerbread Man stories
We compared the characters in the books, "The Gingerbread Man" retold by Eric Kimmel and "The Gingerbread Man" pictures by Karen Schmidt.

Teen Numbers and Ten Frames
we use mini m&m's to show numbers on ten frames

Space Shapes

How We Learned Our Space Shapes

a poem sung to the tune of "This Old Man"
Space Shapes
There are shapes
That take up space.
You can see them in any place.
A cone, cylinder,
cube, and sphere-
Space shapes are 3-D so let's give a cheer!

Shape-O
a space shape game from Mailbox Magazine

 Building with Space Shapes
after reading, "Jack the Builder" by Stuart Murphy, we learned that space shapes can stack.

My Space Shape Book
We learned about the attributes of space shapes by completing a space shape book.

Space Shape Movement
We learned which space shapes could stack, slide, and/or roll and sorted them. After we recorded our results on a Space Shape Movement sheet.

Where is the Witch's Brook
Hide the broom behind a witch.  To see if the broom is hiding there, the student has to say the color and the space shape name.

Space Shapes Guessing Bags
Students will guess which space shape is in the bag by feeling it, record responses on sheet, and draw a real-life object that is the same shape.

Watch and listen to a video, "3D Shapes I Know" at WatchKnowLearn.

Watch a free Brainpopjr video about solid shapes. Click here.

Play online games from Harcourt Publishers about shapes:

Sorting plane and space shapes
After reading, "Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes," by Stuart Murphy, sort the picture cards by plane shapes or space shapes.

Sort the Real-Life Space Shapes
After reading the books, "Cone," "Cylinder," "Sphere," and "Cube" by Boothroyd, sort real life picture cards by their solid shape.

A New School Year

Getting ready for a new school year.......

Lunch Choices
Student names are printed with a label maker and placed on a clothespin.  When the students enter the classroom, they will find their name and make their lunch choice by clipping clothespin on the side of the container by their choice.

100th day puzzle
To prepare: put the puzzle together, flip the pieces over and number them in order 1-100. Each day a student will find the next number on the puzzle pieces and glue it to the puzzle board (cardboard cut to size). On the 100th day of school, this puzzle will be complete!

What Center Do I Go To?
Students know what center they go to by looking at the crayons on the board.  The students will find their color of table that they sit at and the picture below shows which center.

Welcome Bags
On the first day of school each student gets a welcome bag.
Kindergarten Reminders:
pencil - there are many things to learn
penny - YOU are valuable star - always shine and do your best eraser - it's okay to make mistakes
life saver -
I’m always here to help
band aid - together we can make things better
chocolate hug - you are cared for
gum - we always stick together
feather - I'm tickled you're in my class!

 Seat Pockets
My wonderful mom made seat pockets for my classroom.  I have red, yellow, blue, green, and purple seat pockets to match my tables.  Students know where they sit by looking for their name on the
clip-on name badge.  What can you find inside the pockets? a student mini office, a bag of crayons, and an alphabet strip from phonics curriculum.

Student Mini Offices
Student offices are not only tools of reference for each child but also classroom dividers.

Spot the Dog
Spot is ready to 'spot' good behavior!  When good behavior/smart choices are 'spotted' the student gets to feed Spot a bone. When the students earn 10 bones, they get a treat from the treasure box. Then the students have to earn 20 bones to get a treat from the treasure box. After that, they earn 30......

Name Tags
For backpacks and coats: We have hooks in the back of the room.  Students know where they should hang their backpacks and coats by finding their name under the hook.  To prepare glue name badge holder under hook.  Write names on name tags and slide name tag into place.
Our cubbies are for books and other school things:  Glue on name badge holders. Write names on name tags and slide into place.
My awesome husband made mailboxes for our class.  The mailboxes are for our finished work.  Shelf clips from Really Good Stuff are snapped onto the shelf.  Write names on labels and slide them into place.

For the students: name badges and clips are attached to the seat pockets so students know where to sit.

Lunchboxes
Leaky lunchboxes don't go in backpacks or in cubbies. They go in the lunchbox basket!  (Much easier to clean!)

Power Rules
Power rules are posted above my calendar wall.  We chant and sign our power rules every morning. At the beginning of the year, students also have a Power Rules booklet to take home and read to their family.
