Leprechaun Gold Subtraction

 
 

To prepare:
Print off work mat (page 1) onto cardstock.  You can have one per student or one per small group.  (I did one per small group.)  Print off the pot of gold patten (page 2) onto regular copy paper.  Cut out and tape inside plastic cup (cup is upside down).  Cut a slit in the top of the plastic cup. 
Print booklets onto copy paper and cut apart.  I created my booklets with 3 recording pages.
Each student (or small group) will need a workmat, a pot of gold cup, and ten pennies.
Each student will need a Leprechaun gold subtraction booklet.
 
To play:
We did subtraction from 10.  We took turns rolling a dice to determine the number we were taking away.  The leprechaun had 10 pieces of gold (pennies). He hid 5 pieces of gold under the rainbow (the number we rolled on the dice).  (Take 5 pennies from the leprechaun and place it in the slit in the cup - like a piggy bank.) How much gold does he have left?  (Count the number of pennies on the leprechaun.)

We had fun with fish subtraction after reading "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish."

100 Gumpdrops

100 Gumballs for the 100th Day
I got this cute idea from Little Miss Glamorous Goes to Kindergarten blogspot and wanted to let my kinders try it out.  They loved it!

After reading "Baby Penguin" by Aubrey Lang we completed a tree map of facts of a baby king penguin.
 
After we completed the tree map, we created a penguin craft and writing activity.
 

The Mitten

After reading "The Mitten" by Jan Brett and "The Mitten" by  Jim Aylesworth we did a character comparison Venn diagram and completed our own with a cut and paste activity.

Learning with Humpty Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty Teen Numbers Card game
 To play, one student at a time turns over a card.  If the student gets a number card, he will read the number correctly and keep the card.  If the student gets a ten frame card, she will count using the ten frame, say the number correctly, and keep the card.  If the student gets a Humpty Dumpty card, everyone will sing the Humpty Dumpty rhyme and that student will have to put any cards earned back in the draw pile.  Play continues until all cards are earned.
 
 
Humpty Dumpty Craftivity
The students had fun replacing the rhyming words in the Humpty Dumpty rhyme and completing this Humpty Dumpty craft and writing activity.
